Welcome to the XR Hackathon

We’re excited to invite global developers and creators to build immersive XR solutions for the chance to win a total of $700,000 USD in cash prizes.

Running online from November 9-22, participants in the XR Hackathon will form teams with fellow innovators and choose from three product challenge areas - Group AR Effects, Hand and Body Tracking Performance AR Effects, and Voice and Hand VR Experiences.

The product challenges are now available, so it’s time to start building! Learn more about each of the tracks within the Spark AR and Presence Platform challenges below.

Be sure to also check out the resources and webinars pages, where you’ll be regularly hearing from Facebook leaders and product experts during the hackathon, plus don’t forget to join our Facebook group where you can form teams and access a range of resources!

Challenges

Track 1: Group AR Effects

Video calling is one of the most common ways people connect with their friends and loved ones around the world. AR effects for video calling present an opportunity to reimagine this fundamental part of our lives by enabling calls to be more interactive, expressive, and engaging.

Group AR effects are a step in this direction, allowing AR effects to augment everyone on a call, and allowing for lightweight multiplayer interactions between callers. This is a new kind of AR with new possibilities, challenges, and use cases.

For this challenge, we’re looking for you to create AR video calling effects that have interactive elements that can help people feel as though they’re closer together, despite distance.

These can be whatever you imagine, whether it's playful elements, conversation prompts, or something else entirely.

You will need to use the new multipeer API and create a group effect for video calling for your project to qualify.

Please note: AR video calling effects can be more technically demanding than some solo effects, in some cases requiring knowledge of scripting. Please read the FAQ carefully to understand product limitations.

Track 2: Hand & Body Tracking Performance AR Effects

One major trend we are seeing across the board in sharing and AR experiences is a movement towards tracking a person’s entire body. We see a lot of this kind of content showing up in Reels, and hand and body tracking enhancements are a great augmentation opportunity for performative content. They give our creators the power to use hand and body motion to drive novel AR performances.

Hand tracking (Distort on Instagram) uses bounding boxes to detect the gestures of your hands in a scene, and body tracking (Neon Dancer on Instagram) detects up to 20 2D keypoints of your body as you move around.

For this Hackathon, your project should focus on interesting ways to leverage these capabilities to create innovative content. Performances are a starting point, but follow any idea that feels fun and creative!

Track 3: Mixed Reality, Voice and Hand VR Experiences

We are providing you with more building blocks for the interoperable metaverse. During the Connect keynote, we announced Presence Platform, a suite of machine perception and AI capabilities—including Insight SDK, Interaction SDK and Voice SDK—that allow you to build more realistic mixed reality and voice experiences that seamlessly blend virtual content in a user’s physical world.

For this hackathon, we invite you to participate in this track to experiment with publicly available Presence Platform SDKs: Passthrough SDK, Voice SDK, Hand SDK.

This could be a holiday scavenger hunt with passthrough, voice spell casting, summoning voice-interactive equipment, or interacting with a virtual character. You also want to combine these new capabilities in one experience. For example, use your hand to pick up an object and say a voice command in a passthrough world.

Final project submissions must include Voice SDK in order to be considered.

Judging Criteria

The challenges completed and submitted during the Submission Period will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • 1 - 5 Possible Points: Quality, Creativity, Originality of the Idea
  • 1 - 5 Possible Points: Potential for Strategic Impact in/on Product Category
  • 1 - 5 Possible Points: Overall Implementation of Idea including:
              • How well the idea was executed
              • Extent to which Facebook products and their features were leveraged
              • Extent to which respect for user privacy was considered or incorporated in the design

Submission Requirements

  1. Demo Video. Your video (hosted on Facebook Video, YouTube, Vimeo, or Youku) should be around 2 minutes, include a demo of your working application via a step-by-step visual demo, and be available in English. Be sure to talk about how you used Spark AR Studio features or Presence Platform.
  2. Access. Please submit the Spark AR effect ID or app ID.  If you’re submitting a Spark AR effect, please publish your effect (publishing effects checklist and demo video requirement) and submit a test link. For Presence Platform, please provide a GitHub link with a README with information about the project and setup instructions and the APK.
  3. Complete project submission form: All required fields must be completed and published on the hackathon platform BEFORE the deadline. Late entries will NOT be accepted.
